In Hyderabad, at the base of Tirumala, artisans have been creating intricate wooden statues of Lord Balaji and other deities for over a century. These artisans are now preparing to apply for a geographical indication tag for their Madhavamala wood carvings. These carvings are well-known for their detailed depictions of gods and goddesses, including Kalyana Balaji, Raja and Rani dolls, children's toys, doors, windows, pooja mandapams, wooden pillars, and furniture. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will submit the application, with NABARD serving as the facilitation agency. This will be the 20th geographical indication filing from Andhra Pradesh, with practitioner Subhajit Saha assisting the artisans in the process.
